Whether in food processing plants, pharmaceutical plants, or general chemical plants, you can find air filters installed on various tanks and containers.

Let's look at an actual case that occurred in a Japanese factory.

The primary function of the air filter element is to help maintain pressure balance inside and outside the tank.
When the internal and external pressure becomes unbalanced, the tank may deform (either inward or outward).
The example shown above illustrates a case where negative pressure inside the tank caused the top of the tank to collapse. After a site inspection by fire safety personnel, the actual damage area was mapped using 3D modeling, as shown in the image below.




It was observed that nearly one-third of the storage tanks had developed dents.
If the workers hadn't stopped their operations in time, the damage to the tanks would likely have been even more severe.





The main cause of the negative pressure is a blockage in the filter screen of the vent pipe at the top of the tank, which prevents proper airflow.
Therefore, when liquid is being pumped out of the tank, the pressure imbalance between the inside and outside of the tank creates negative pressure, causing the tank to collapse under the pressure.



The factory ultimately received assistance from the fire department to redesign and reinstall the ventilation system. They also implemented a regular inspection and maintenance program for the ventilation ducts to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
